NYC Marathon Fans

The NYC marathon attracts 50,000 runners and even more supporters, fans and volunteers. During my assignment covering the event, I caught some glimpses of the fans. It was one of the happiest occasions I've experienced photographing the colorful mosaic that is the people of NYC. I was stationed in East Harlem along 1st Ave and enjoyed the whole event.

Mermaid Parade, Coney Island, NYC

First time to attend the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island. It did not disappoint. Sunny, mild weather made the day ultra enjoyable. So many NYers in good spirits, despite the swelling crowds all along the boardwalk and Stillwell Ave. On the boardwalk or in the parade, there were sights everywhere you looked. Color, glitter, fish scales and sea shells. So much spunk and creativity on display, it's not hard to appreciate what this parade represents: a parade for artists and creative folk.

(My) Bronx Backyard Garden

When I moved to New York City from North Texas, I expected a lot of things, none of which was having a vegetable garden. But I have one. And stuff is actually growing. Quite well. It's been a labor of love and respite from the hustle of NYC life. During an event I was photographing at a five star restaurant in Manhattan, I was having smalltalk with someone. They asked where I lived in the city and I said the Bronx. The person replied, "You know...I have never met anyone who lives in the Bronx." I didn't know exactly how to respond but felt no disrespect. Often while tending the garden, I've thought about that conversation and think to myself, I'm glad I live where I do because I have this, a Bronx backyard garden.
